Most frequent subsequences in a word

Abstract:

There are 12 ways to erase eight letters in the word "Mississippi" to obtain "sip". More generally, inside any long word with very few distinct letters, there are many copies of some fixed subsequence. We shall discuss how many is "many" when "few" is bigger than a gazillion and two.

Joint work with Aleksandre Saatashvili.
