Abstract:
Bryan Birch proved in 1959 that in any straight-line drawing of the complete graph $K_{3n}$ in the plane there are n vertex-disjoint $3$-cycles that all surround a common point. I will talk about the recent result that this remains true if the drawing consists of continuous arcs instead of straight-line segments and its higher-dimensional generalization. This is joint work with Pablo SoberĂ³n.
